What is a Tax Identification Number (TIN)?

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique 11-digit number issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) or State Internal Revenue Service (SIRS) to individuals and businesses for tax purposes in Nigeria. It is mandatory for all taxpayers and is required for various transactions including employment, business registration, and tax filing.

Method 1: Online Registration (Recommended)

Step 1: Visit the FIRS Portal

Go to the official FIRS TIN registration portal:

Step 2: Create an Account

  • • Verify your email through the confirmation link sent to your inbox

Step 3: Complete the Registration Form

Step 4: Submit and Wait for Approval

  • • Review all information for accuracy
  • • Submit the application
  • • You'll receive a confirmation email with your application reference number
  • • Processing typically takes 24-48 hours

Step 5: Receive Your TIN

  • • Once approved, you'll receive your 11-digit TIN via email
  • • You can also download your TIN certificate from the portal

Method 2: State Internal Revenue Service (SIRS) Registration

Each state in Nigeria has its own Internal Revenue Service (SIRS) that also issues TINs. You can register through your state's tax office if you prefer or if you need state-specific tax services.

How to Register via State Tax Office:

Step 1: Locate Your State Tax Office

Visit the website or physical office of your State Internal Revenue Service. Each state has its own portal and office locations.

Step 2: Complete Registration Form

Fill out the TIN registration form with your personal and contact information. Forms are usually available online or at the tax office.

Step 3: Submit Documents

Submit photocopies of required documents along with your application form. Some states may require original documents for verification.

Step 4: Payment (if applicable)

Some states may charge a small registration fee. Payment can usually be made at designated banks or online.

Step 5: Collect Your TIN

After processing (usually 3-5 working days), you can collect your TIN certificate from the tax office or download it online if available.

Method 3: Physical Registration at Tax Office

If you prefer in-person registration or don't have reliable internet access, you can visit any FIRS or State Tax Office physically.

Locate the FIRS or State Tax Office nearest to you. You can find office locations on their respective websites.

Obtain and Fill Registration Form

Request a TIN registration form, fill it out completely, and attach required documents.

Submit Application

Submit your completed form and documents to the registration desk. You'll receive an acknowledgment slip.

Collect Your TIN

Return after the processing period (usually 3-5 working days) to collect your TIN certificate.

Important Notes

  • TIN registration is FREE. Be cautious of fraudulent websites or individuals charging fees for registration.
  • Your TIN is valid for life once issued. You don't need to renew it.
